Thomas Woodfield

Originally from Christchurch, Thomas studied Performance Voice (Countertenor) at the University of Auckland with Dr. Morag Atchison. During his university study, he won prizes and scholarships in singing, composition, and academic excellence. A highlight of his study was performing Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah using an edition created from facsimiles of the original manuscripts from the Bodelian Library.

Thomas has been a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir, the New Zealand Youth Choir, the University of Auckland Chamber Choir, the Christchurch Cathedral Choir, and is a current member of New Zealand’s premiere chamber choir, Voices New Zealand.

Thomas’ solo performance highlights Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio with the South Auckland Choral
Society, performing as the Alto soloist for Händel’s Messiah with the Tauranga Civic Choir and the Bay
Classic Soloists Orchestra, and Jack Body’s Carol to St Stephen with the New Zealand Youth Choir, which
was broadcast live on the Australian Broadcasting Channel throughout Australia and New Zealand.
As a conductor, Thomas is a past Music Director of the Christchurch Boys’ Choir and has conducted choirs in the Auckland Kids Sing that have achieved Silver and Bronze awards. In 2021, he directed Staccoro, St
Andrew’s College’s Senior Choir, who won “Outstanding Performance of a Romantic Era Composition” at the Canterbury/West Coast Regional Big Sing.

Thomas is delighted to have been appointed Music Director of the Liedertafel Male Voice Choir and rekindle a connection which began in 1989 when his grandfather, Rev. O.T. Woodfield, joined the choir as a Tenor 1.
